Deregulation in Massachusetts
Massachusetts deregulated its electricity markets in March 1998, with three participating utilities: NSTAR, (a merger of Boston Edison, Commonwealth Edison and Cambridge Edison), Mass Electric and Western Mass Electric. For those customers who were receiving electricity prior to the introduction of the new deregulation, the Department of Telecommunications and Energy extended a special discounted rate.
